Also called the love drug, Ecstasy is a psychoactive drug, known chemically as 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine, abbreviated by MDMA. Ecstasy was produced by a pharmaceutical company in 1914 in order to be used as an appetite suppressant, but has never been used for this purpose. In 60 years, began to be used by psychotherapists to raise the spirits of patients and in the 70´s came to be consumed recreationally, mainly being spread among college students. The use of this drug is banned in several countries, including Brazil.
Although this mode of use is no longer employed, ecstasy can be injected intravenously. Currently illicit ecstasy has been realized in the form of oral tablets.
The effect of ecstasy may take an average of eight hours, but this varies with the body. In persons who have greater quantities of drug metabolizing enzymes, the effect may last for less time ecstasy. As enzymes metabolize toxins from the body, they also produce active metabolites that continue to exert psychoactive activity, like the drug itself, but not very nice effects that can last for a few more hours.
The users feel this drug increased alertness, increased sexual interest, feeling of well-being, a great physical and mental capacity, euphoria and increased sociability and extroversion.
After the drug occur some unwanted effects such as increased muscle tension and motor activity, increased body temperature, stiffness and pain in the muscles of the lower limbs and lumbar spine, headaches, nausea, appetite loss, blurred vision, dry mouth, insomnia, high fluctuation in blood pressure, hallucinations, agitation, anxiety, panic attack and brief episodes of psychosis. The increase in alertness may lead to hyperactivity and flight of ideas. In the days following the use of the drug user may become depressed, difficulty concentrating, anxious and fatigued.
The long-term use of ecstasy causes many health hazards. An excess of serotonin in the synaptic cleft caused by drug use causes irreversible damage to nerve cells. These cells, when injured, have compromised its operation, and only recover when other neurons compensate for lost function.

Studies in human consumers of this drug confirm the loss of serotonergic activity, which leads its user to make mental and behavioral disorders, such as difficulties with memory, both verbal and visual, difficulty making decisions, panic attacks, severe depression, paranoia, hallucinations , depersonalization, impulsivity, losing control, and sudden death due to cardiovascular collapse.
The use of ecstasy can cause liver damage, which is softened, and increase in size, with a tendency to bleeding. Depending on the degree of toxicity, the disease progresses to fulminant hepatitis, can cause death if there is a liver transplant.
In the heart, acceleration of heart rates and blood pressure increase may lead to rupture of some blood vessels, causing bleeding.
The use of ecstasy linked to intense physical activity (dancing for several hours) can cause increased body temperature and the consequent internal bleeding, which can lead to death. The increase in body temperature has some symptoms such as disorientation, stop sweating, dizziness, headaches, fatigue, cramps and fainting.
There are no studies that show that ecstasy causes physical dependence, but we can not say that this will not happen.
