It is quite common to look at a high level athlete as a hero, even as the sports television media often treat him well. For the Brazilian media, the athlete is a hero because he is generally poorly paid, because the training is very strict and because he represents our country. And it is even more a hero when it is poor at the beginning of his career, and this is an important fact: in a country led by a liberal ideology based on the principle of the winner, the loser has no place. And a person of lower class who win in life by his own effort, so far as to represent the country, is clothed with honor and fatally recognized as a heroine.

The fact that many athletes have been awarded the mantle of the noble hero, and after having been caught up in doping tests often shock the public. Hatch, as a hero worth his salt would be a champion by nature, without chemical aid. Some cases of doping in sport became quite famous, as is the case of Ben Johnson, who had canceled his gold medal in the Seoul Olympics, and American Marion Jones, who won five medals in Sydney.

Not the case here to argue whether the athlete actually ingested substances not permitted by the committee or if it was a mistake. It does not matter. What matters is that the athlete is a human being that seeks to overcome your body daily, and as such, sometimes found in doping a means of keeping at the pinnacle of their sport. In any case it is necessary to understand what is doping. Well, doping is any change, encouraged by unnatural means, which occurs in the functioning of the body in favor of improving the yield in a given physical activity. Contrary to what seems, the doping is not a modern practice: since 2000 BC, the Chinese were already using substances which, when chewed, had a stimulating effect and, later, in the ancient Olympics, the use was common among athletes of a miscellaneous plants, whose main ingredient was a mushroom, which surtia hallucinogenic effects. Perhaps the most shocking case of doping occurred in the former East Germany between the 1970s and 1980s, fell pregnant to the athletes so that they came to the competition pregnant two to three months. During this period, the woman´s body naturally increases its rate of hemoglobin, causing increase your aerobic capacity. After the race, the athletes went through miscarriages and returned to their training.

But already before that, in the 1960s, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in conjunction with UNESCO inciaram a systematized program to combat doping, drafting appropriate legislation and therefore also suitable punishments. In general, it is customary to classify the three different types of doping:

1 - pre-competition doping is one that tends to prepare the athlete for competition. The most commonly used are diuretics, blood transfusions, anabolic steroids and growth hormone;

2 - Doping during the competition: They are those substances which, when assimilated in moments close to the competition, improve the athlete´s performance. They are: tranquilizers, stimulants and painkillers.

3 - post-doping competitive: diuretics are extensively used in this case, which can be manipulated to rapid weight loss or elimination of intake of other doping pre-competitive or competitive.

The fight against doping is a problem: that the technology of an athlete doping is always ahead of its detection system. This leads us to think that many athletes that we see as heroes are human. Human point of opting for the use of doping to achieve and maintain their reign. Does the human body has not reached its limit?
