Pregnancy is a period of a woman´s life that needs to be assessed with particular care, since it involves various physical changes, hormonal and psychological that may interfere with their health as a whole. All these changes generate a series of symptoms that can interfere with food intake and therefore should be considered when defining the diet of pregnant women.

Hormonal changes, increased sensitivity of smell and excess stomach acid are some of the factors that contribute to 80% of pregnant women feel sick, which scientifically is called emesis gravidarum.

It is speculated that this framework can be considered a protective mechanism in which the pregnant woman tends to get away from some factors that can trigger birth defects, but this phenomenon is not yet scientifically proven.

With the increased synthesis of progesterone in the ovary in the first weeks of pregnancy, the pregnant woman has an increased sleep, fatigue, decreased bowel function, decreased gastric emptying and increased fluid retention, which can generate an intense discomfort in women pregnant and intensify nausea.

These symptoms may subside after three months of pregnancy, but in some cases can last throughout pregnancy and so we must be careful that the feeding of the pregnant woman does not promote any deficit that may impact the optimal development of the baby.

Here are some tips to reduce the nausea during pregnancy:

- Eat some food every two hours, always in small amounts - many hours fasting is one of the factors that increase the nausea;

- Salted crackers and toast can be a good tip for breakfast - these foods are an easy to digest and do not overload the stomach;

- Avoid strong smells, fatty foods and strong spices - these foods are digested more slowly and may overload the stomach and let the feeling of full stomach, uncomfortable;

- Intolerance to milk and meat is very common. As these foods are the main sources of protein, calcium and iron, it is important to be careful and choose other food sources of protein: eggs, yogurt, cheese, legumes, fish and chicken;

- Do not consume alcohol - in addition to affecting the formation of the baby, can make the job of the stomach;

- Do not abuse the coffee - and disrupt sleep if consumed in high amounts, can foster more sick;

- Add lemon water or tea and drink during the day may help reduce queasiness;

- Eat foods rich in carbohydrates - rice, pasta, potatoes. Besides having an easy digestion, provide energy and help control the nausea;

- During meals do not drink anything, this may hinder digestion;

- Lemonade without sugar and cold drinks and acid helps to reduce motion sickness;

- Avoid lying down after meals.

Remember that the medical care during the prenatal is essential to identify risk factors and to control all the symptoms that occur during pregnancy.
